The Black Obsidian Facial Spa Set
I understand and respect that the cultural framework of Gua sha is a very different lens from my own. I can appreciate it, but can only give a thorough review from my own perspective: I received most of my education in the western medicine and western bodywork frameworks and incorporate other lenses but mostly stick with that.
Very smooth handling tools - nicely finished edges. I've tried quartz, stainless steel and obsidian tools now and did find that the volcanic glass warmed faster and stayed warmer (without pre-warming) than the others. I also felt the surface has a bit more resistance/grab and felt like it subtly lifted the skin more than the quartz tools - and so the whole massage process felt different. There are definitely subtle improvements to my appearance beyond what was getting with manual massage, I have less sinus pain, my TMJ issues which were caused by tension have reduced and it has contributed to lowering my stress as the practice is intentional, rather meditational, and neurologically relaxing your muscles has an upstream effect on your brain. All good things!
I like using gently pre-warmed obsidian lifting and rolling tools for the strokes along the nasal passages (initially), jaw, neck and base of the skull which effect a lot of lymphatic drainage. I like using chilled quartz or stainless tools to finish over my sinuses and around my eyes for the vasoconstriction/de-puffing effect. I also use the tools on other parts of my body for self-massage. I plan to swap out my lesser--quality quartz tools for some Mt. Lai versions soon.
I'm enjoying this set. I found that I love obsidian, it is very warming, and it's so nice to have the two tools together.
I see results so quickly in the puffiness of my face when I use this! Very happy with my purchase (I got the obsidian set)
Already after 3 days of using it I can see that my skin is reacting to it. I have been using gua sha for a while and I have acne prone skin and I can see that my skin reacts differently to massages with black obsidian versus cooling stones. Very grateful I came across the knowledge of mount lai!
The “mount lai” is peeling off already but the products themselves are nice!!
The gua sha tool is great and I've seen results from using it everyday for almost a month now. The facial tool, on the other hand, fell apart after a few uses. The larger roller completely fell off and my trying to reattach it did not last long. Pretty disappointed because I was loving the roller. I wish it was more durable.
I bought this set as my first ever gua sha tools according to the stone quiz and I was not disappointed! There is a noticeable difference from the cheap quality products you can find elsewhere. Definitely worth the price! I’ll need more soon!
Absolutely love this, couldn't be happier I finally got it!

Besides improving overall health and radiance of the skin, consistent facial massage with Mount Lai tools has a multitude of benefits:

by guiding excess fluid away from the face
by targeting and relaxing tight muscles in the face
by aiding in circulation, bringing blood and nutrients to the skin
by gently working and stretching the fascia that sits underneath the skin
by soothing and calming the complexion
Why It Works
Mount Lai tools are designed to work on the lymphatic system, address adhesions in the fascia and melt tension in the facial and jaw muscles, promoting a radiant complexion + combatting fine lines and wrinkles.
01 / Why is lymphatic drainage important? The lymphatic system is a part of the immune system that helps the body get rid of toxins and waste. ... If the lymphatic system is not functioning well, it can result in fluid build up which may result in puffy skin. Stagnation of the lymphatic system can also lead to an increase in toxins, which can make the skin appear dull or even result in acne breakouts.
02 / The benefits of lymphatic drainage are two-fold. Lymphatic drainage removes toxic and congestive substances from the tissues, which allows greater absorption of nutrients. ... Besides aiding with lymphatic drainage, gua sha massage stimulates circulation and blood flow. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the other cells and the combination of lymphatic drainage + massage allows you to remove toxins from the tissues and absorb greater nutrients to nourish the skin.
03 / Why is using a tool better than using your hands? The beauty of Mount Lai tools is that they work on the skin without pulling. As a result, the tool is able to work on the very surface level of the skin to target the lymph system and fascia that you wouldn’t be able to target with your hands. ... Tools allow you to work more evenly on the entire face and target pressure points more precisely than you would get with just your hands alone.
